The other weekend, Hold Up Art Gallery in Los Angeles unveiled a solo exhibition from artist and painter Allison Torneros. Titled ‘Streams of Subconsciousness’, the exhibit featured a large collection of work which was a treat to both fans of the her work and to those who were not aware of her until recently. The gallery space was covered from wall to wall with Torneros’ art which depicts the mundane routine of every day life clashing against moments of surrealism and dream-like settings.

Does anyone want to take over my studio?

I’m officially leaving my wonderful studio at the Brewery Arts Complex that I’ve spent the last year and a half making art babies in. This is because I’m moving into a gorgeous N. Hollywood apartment (still can’t believe it, I’m so excited), which means I’ll no longer afford to keep this place.

As for my work space, I’ll be sharing with the talented dudes from ThinkTank in the Fashion District. I’m excited to be able to work around other creative folks —I was starting to get cabin fever from being by myself so often.

So if anyone is seriously interested, here are the details:

Located at the Brewery Arts Complex, right outside of downtown. 5 minutes away from Little Tokyo and Chinatown. This big studio is in a loft apartment that sits over the 618E Gallery. The downstairs space is shared with Translight Photography Center. This situation would be perfect for anyone that does photography (TPC has dark rooms for rent) or graphic design (they also have large format printers). The place is only steps away from Barbara’s, the Brewery’s restaurant/bar. The front of the space would work well as a lounge area, this is where I currently keep my tv, couch and coffee table.

Available November 15th (possibly earlier). $790 a month, includes utilities/internet. Shared bathroom and kitchen area. The space is WORK ONLY, not available for a live/work situation. For more info or if interested, contact me at atorneros@gmail.com.

Hold Up Art welcomes Allison Torneros back to their space with a new exhibition, entitled Streams of Subconsciousness. A mixed media painter and graphic designer, who creates hybrid works driven by fast images and her own growing online community, Allison is hailed as a new breed of pop artist. Her work was previously featured as part of the Uno exhibition at Hold Up Art, celebrating the one year anniversary of the gallery’s opening earlier this year.

Taking a reactive approach to the creative process, Allison allows her paintings to do the ‘talking’: by throwing paint in an unpredictable manner, leaving it to dry overnight, then interpreting the random, “Rorschach”-like compositions. The implied subject which Allison discerns within each piece is then super-imposed over the previous painting, creating multi-layered compositions.

“I attempt to capture the essence and emotions of dreaming, as random, ethereal, sensual, and frightening as they may be,” says Allison about her work. “When different elements of the paintings emerge they create their own intriguing storyline left open to interpretation, the same way we try to make sense of a dream moments after waking.”

Allison is fully embracing the popularity and reach of social media. She is directly engaging her fans on Twitter and Facebook with her “Paint by Word” project. Allison posts her initial paint washes to her website and Facebook, giving her fans the opportunity to describe what they see in one or two words. She then uses these words and status updates for inspiration and titles for her work. Allison wants her fans to feel as if they are influential partners in her work, further playing off the idea of a collective consciousness. Allison recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising $8,000 (the goal was only $4,000!) to fund her first three-dimensional installation experiment, a feature for the upcoming Streams of Subconsciousness exhibit.

Her style is strikingly different, and the work is highly accessible. So much so that clothing giant The North Face recently teamed up with Allison Torneros to come up with her own unique line of art on apparel. Following the success of Nom Nom Truck (runners up of Season 1 of Food Network’s hit Great Food Truck Race), food truck branding and design has become a niche for the young artist. Allison’s design company, CircleDot, a creative studio, boasts a roster of clients that includes such names as Disney, Procter & Gamble, and DreamWorks, as well as celebrities and innovative startup companies.

“Allison is the poster child for contemporary art,” says Brian Lee, curator at Hold Up Art. ” Not only is her style a seamless blend of disciplines; from street art to surrealism, but she has reevaluated the notion of what an artist can and should do to further one’s career. The work she has done through CircleDot is enough for even a design veteran to feel accomplished, however at such a young age, she is only foreshadowing the bright future ahead of her.”

Tickling the subconscious in her most recent works are elegantly rendered images that poke through dreamy atmospheres of fluid elemental cloud colors, contrasted at times by striking iconic illustrations. Allison is inspired by nature, psychology, and by dreams. Moved by emotions and feelings from her dreams, Allison attempts to convey the kind of impressions that linger on the mind in the wake of sensual experience.

-Dance floor in the front gallery. I’m taking over the entire place!!! This is doubling as my birthday party, dammit. A few of my talented buddies will be playing a set, more details on that later..

For my fellow creatives (whether you’re a designer, artist, illustrator, photographer, writer, etc etc)—If you work in the creative industry, it’s no secret that people will try to screw you over for creative work. It’s not always their fault, a lot of the time people are completely clueless about the creative process and are equally as clueless on how they should go about commissioning work; they don’t realize how rude they come across when asking you to do work for free, because they don’t understand that it actually takes TIME and SKILL to do what you do. Aw shucks, they don’t know any better. But instead of resenting these people (who really just want a piece of that funky magical touch only you could provide), as a creative you need to know your worth, be vocal and assertive, and protect yourself. Read up on how to put together solid contracts/agreements, set up timelines ahead of time so both parties are aware of what’s expected, and know when to say NO. And when you set up boundaries, when you say no every once in a while, not only does it protect you from getting stepped on, they actually respect you more for it.

And if they’re still trying to lowball you, kick their ass to the curb. You’re worth more than that.
